Russia – 1974, Morris 1300 Samara – Back Onto Four Wheels!

The beginning of March, 2018 saw Denis celebrating 12-months of ADO16 ownership and around 6-months since he started attempting to make it roadworthy – an ADO16 restoration in Archangelsk, northern Russia is a very challenging task especially given the local salaries and the huge logistical problems of importing any goods into the Russian Federation; Denis had little option but to attempt to make his Morris 1300 GT look stock from the outside but under the skin to base it around a Lada Samara...

...with the ADO16 inner wings, trumpets and front subframe being dispensed with considerable strengthening was required to make safe the Lada suspension system and provide necessary engine mounts.

Let’s not forget Denis is clearly a highly accomplished, very skilful welder; he thinks nothing of attaching something close with a view to redoing and bringing to an ideal position in the future. So it was that he and Andrei could not resist taking an opportunity late one evening, with work to go to in the morning, of putting the Morris back on four wheels – this was a hugely historic moment; for the first time in many years the Morris stood confidently on all 4-wheels with sprung suspension.

Former Yugoslavia National Day

Today we remember what would have been Republic Day of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia...

...many of you will be aware of the Yugoslavian assembled IMV Austin 1300 but today we feature not IMV, rather Interpromet of Belgrade. Interpromet was a general car importer in Yugoslavia and prior to the involvement of IMV were importing versions of the ADO16 and indeed even imported during 1973 & 1974 after IMV assembly ceased.

We have Interpromet images from the Belgrade Fair in 1966 and 1967, and also an advert dating back to 1964.

With special thanks to Nebojsa

Panama Independence Day

Today we celebrate Independence Day for the Republic of Panama; period images from Panama clearly show a number of UK cars but we are yet to find any with the ADO16...

...however back in 1963, Jeff Koch drove 7,000 miles from Spokane, Washington, USA to the Panama Canal in an MG 1100 on the then recently opened Pan American Highway. 30-days of driving took in areas such as the El Tapon (The stopper) in Guatemala whilst climbing included the 11,500 feet of Cerro de la Muerte (Mountain of Death) south of San José, Costa Rica.

Once in Panama Jeff entered his MG 1100 into the Isthmian Auto Sport Association events which included slaloms, gymkanas, rallys and hillclimbs!

With thanks to My Hemmings.

The MG badge sold extremely well in the United States

Poland 1969 – Polish Rally Championships, 4th Eliminator

Strangely, Marek Wachowski and Eugeniusz Pach didn’t feature in the 3rd eliminator of the the Rajdowe Mistrzostwa Polski (Polish Rally Championships) but the MG was back in action for the 4th eliminator, which in September, 1969 was the 19th Rally Wislański (19. Rajd Wiślański)...

...the event covered a distance of 1275km, including 7 special stages, 4 mountain speed tests, 2 flat speed tests, a braking test, and a manoeuvrability test. 20 crews started and only 15 finished – records show that Marek Wachowski was no partnered with Piotr Mystkowski and they finished a very creditable 5th overall in general classification.

Sadly there don’t appear to be any photographs of the MG during the 4th eliminator but we do have some rather intriguing pictures from Poland – there’s both a red and a white MG 1100, and also a third ADO16 at an undisclosed location; it is a former car repair centre that shut down at least 20-years ago and the origin of the cars is a complete mystery.

I wonder what region of Poland 🤔

Shame to see one like this

Are these recent pictures? Does it still survive? Is it going to be restored?

What are the chances that one of them is the car?
