It’s been three weeks since we joined AROnline for their first-ever meet at the Great British Car Journey in Ambergate, Derbyshire – and we’re only just getting round to reflecting on it properly. Sorry for the delay, but as they say, better late than never!
This wasn’t just a debut venue for AROnline; it also marked ADO16.info’s first visit to this unique and increasingly important attraction. And what a fantastic day it turned out to be.
A Venue That Celebrates the Best of British
Housed in a former wire works nestled beside the River Derwent, the Great British Car Journey tells the story of Britain’s once-mighty car industry through over 140 vehicles — all beautifully presented and packed with nostalgic appeal.
From humble Austins to executive Rovers, this museum strikes a perfect balance between education and emotional connection. Visitors can chart the course of British car production from the early 20th century through to the industry’s final volume-produced models. And for those wanting a more hands-on experience, the “Drive Dad’s Car” experience lets you get behind the wheel of a proper classic. What’s not to love?
Sunshine, Showers, and a Warm Welcome
The weather, in true British fashion, gave us a bit of everything – sunny spells interrupted by the odd sharp shower. But spirits remained high, and the mix of indoor exhibits and café comforts meant nobody was left out in the rain for long.
The car park was a treat in itself, showcasing a varied mix of classics. There were Rovers, MGs, Austins, a Morris, a Jaguar, and even a BMW MINI Convertible. It was a celebration of marques that still stir hearts, with many visitors taking time to admire each other’s pride and joy.
Just One ADO16… But It Won!
Now, we have to admit – we were hoping to see a few more ADO16s joining us on the day. As you’ll know, we kept things deliberately informal: no sign-up forms, no show ‘n’ shine prep, no bunting or bollards. Just turn up, have a chat, soak in the atmosphere.
And turn up one of you did – in style! The sole ADO16 in attendance, a lovely Morris 1300, stood out for all the right reasons and was rewarded for its efforts by scooping one of the event awards. Proof, if ever it were needed, that quality trumps quantity.
A Look Back at MG Rover – From the Inside
One of the real highlights of the day was the talk by Kevin Jones, former PR Manager for Rover Group and later MG Rover. His presentation pulled no punches, giving a rare and often emotional insight into the internal workings, culture shifts, and strategic missteps that ultimately led to the collapse of one of Britain’s most recognisable motoring names.
It was a fascinating, moving talk – a reminder of just how far-reaching and complicated the MG Rover story really is, and how much it still resonates with enthusiasts today.
Worth the Journey
If you’ve not yet visited the Great British Car Journey, do put it on your list. Whether you go with a group or under your own steam, there’s something here for every car enthusiast — especially those with a soft spot for British-built motors. And if you’ve ever wanted to relive those childhood trips in your dad’s Marina or your grandad’s Allegro, you can actually do just that.
